E44 Diversity in Therapy with Safia Abdulle

On this week's episode, Simon speaks Safia Abdulle (@sabdulle_) - a therapist and professor interested in studying the connections between race and mental health care. Simon talks with her about her work within mental health as well as why she chose to pursue this path.

Safia is a 1st generation immigrant-settler, and Somali-Canadian woman. Safia is a Registered Social Worker with a Masters’ degree in Social Work, and a BA in Developmental Psychology. Additionally, Safia is currently earning her PhD in Social Work at York University. Safia currently works as a Clinical Social Worker/Therapist at a counselling agency for Black and racialized people, while also working as a Professor teaching courses on community mental health. Safia’s research and career interests include anti-oppressive, anti-racist social work practice; poverty reduction; neurodiversity; the impacts of intersectionality on mental health; and the liberation of marginalized populations.
